The Importance of Sperm Freezing: A Chance for Future Fatherhood

There are many factors that can affect male fertility, such as certain medical treatments or procedures. This is where sperm freezing comes into play.

Sperm freezing is the process of storing sperm at an extremely low temperature, usually -196°C, using liquid nitrogen. This freezing and storage method halts the biological clock of sperm, allowing it to remain alive and usable for an extended period of time. This technology has been around for decades and has helped countless men preserve their fertility.

Why is Sperm Freezing Important?

There are various reasons why sperm freezing is important.
One of the main reasons is for men who are unable to attend the IVF unit on the day of their partner's egg collection or treatment.

In such cases, a sample can be frozen at any time prior to the scheduled date of treatment. This is particularly helpful for couples coming from abroad, as it eliminates the need for repeated travel and reduces the stress and pressure of time constraints.

Another reason for sperm freezing is for men who have difficulties producing a sperm sample on the day of egg collection. This could be due to psychological reasons such as performance anxiety or stress.

Sperm freezing allows them to have a backup sample stored in case they are unable to produce one on the day of treatment.

Some men may also have sperm parameters that vary from sample to sample, which can affect their chances of success in IVF treatments. By freezing multiple samples over time, they can increase their chances of having a viable sperm sample when needed.

One of the main reasons for sperm freezing is to protect male fertility during medical treatments such as chemotherapy. This type of treatment can often cause permanent damage to the testicles and result in a man being unable to produce sperm. By freezing and storing sperm before starting treatment, men have the opportunity to use their own biological material in the future to father a child.

In addition, sperm freezing also offers an alternative for single men who wish to preserve their fertility for personal or medical reasons.  It allows them to have more control over their reproductive choices. It gives them the freedom to delay starting a family until they are ready, without worrying about the potential decline in their fertility as they age. This gives them the opportunity to become fathers at a later time when they are ready.

The idea of sperm freezing  may seem insignificant. However, it has become a vital and life-changing technology. Sperm freezing has helped many men and families overcome the challenges of infertility and start their own biological families.

How is Sperm Freezing Performed?

The process of sperm freezing involves collecting a semen sample and then processing it to remove any debris. The sample is then mixed with a cryoprotectant to protect the sperm cells during the freezing process. The  resultant sample is then transferred  into cryovials  then slowly cooled to -196°C using liquid nitrogen. This process can be repeated multiple times, allowing for multiple samples to be stored if needed. Once frozen, the vials are stored in a cryogenic tank, where they can remain viable for many years.

But how long can sperm actually be frozen and still be usable?

Sperm that has been properly frozen and stored can remain viable for decades. In fact, there have been cases where sperm has been successfully used after being frozen for over 20 years.

At our facility, we take great care in ensuring that your sperm is frozen and stored correctly. We use state-of-the-art technology and follow strict protocols to ensure the highest quality of sperm
